Joy Over Sadness

Christina believed God called her to a teaching job in an unfamiliar village often called “the home of witchcraft.” This required a move away from the big city and from all her friends and family. Christina chose to set aside her comfort for the sake of kindergarten students who would otherwise receive no education. Forty children, six and seven years old, would now receive a full education, including an opportunity to hear about the God who loves and desires them.

Two weeks before school started Christina packed up her family, said goodbye to all that was familiar, and traveled five hours by bus to her new home of Bukabwa. Upon arrival, Christina learned the house promised to her was no longer available. The only living space available now? Shared tents on the school grounds.

Christina reflected on her willingness to stay in Bukabwa amidst difficult circumstances.

“I knew God called me to Bukabwa for this season. Having the assurance that I am walking in God’s will for my life made it easier to cope with the living situation we faced. So, I made a decision. I will sleep in a tent. I will wake up every day and choose joy over sadness, love the students well, and be faithful to God’s calling. I am going to be kingdom-minded and trust God to take care of the rest.

Of course, as soon as I made that my stance, we received news that construction would start soon for teachers’ housing. Was God testing me to see if I would quit? I don’t know. But this I know is true: God is good and He cares for all the details of our lives.”

In a little over a week, Twelve21 raised the funds necessary to construct four teachers’ houses. We praise the Lord that construction is already underway and look forward to updating you as the building process continues.

You rejoice in this, even though now for a short time, if necessary, you suffer grief in various trials so that the proven character of your faith–more valuable than gold which, though perishable, is refined by fire–may result in praise, glory, and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
