God Is Mzungu (White)
Part of the teacher training included spending time in breakout groups looking up Scriptures about the character and nature of God. We then asked the teachers to tell us some lies about God that are common in the local Tanzanian culture and compare that with what Scripture says. I wrote their responses on the board. As I wrote about the false belief that God is God for only white people, I told my translator that it made me sad. He said, “don’t be sad.”
“No, but it IS sad,” I said.
“You asked for lies, you get lies,” he replied.
Yes, I did ask for lies. And it’s good for us to know that this is what some people who do not know God believe about Him. This is why we go—to speak the truth; to tell them that God is for them, that God loves them and sent Jesus to die for them so they can be saved.
Revelation 7:9-10: After these things I looked, and behold, a great multitude which no one could count, from every nation and all the tribes, peoples, and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, and palm branches were in their hands; and they cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb.”
Not only do we go to tell them about the love of Christ, we go to show them. At the end of the Sunday church service, we washed the feet of the local church members and prayed over them, one-by-one. This is how we break down lies that pervade the culture, by showing them the love of Christ.
John 13:34-35: I am giving you a new commandment, that you love one another; just as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all people will know that you are My disciples: if you have love for one another.”
Please join me in prayer that all the people of Bukabwa will know that salvation in Christ is FOR THEM!
